Wind Turbine Supervisor
As Red Rocket’s Wind Turbine Supervisor, Nontsasa Gaga’s introduction to renewable energy came while she was travelling home one day. “I saw a big ‘wheel’ rotating on the R397 and was interested to know more about it. Upon my research when choosing my career path, I found that the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (SARETEC) was offering a course in renewable energy, and I applied,” she said.
It was because of this intrigue and a strong sense of purpose that she enrolled for the wind turbine technician course. She has been involved in different roles in construction, operation, and maintenance ever since.
“The most fulfilling aspect on my current role is to provide a conducive working environment to different contractors. And advising the contractors on their daily challenges that can hinder them from meeting their milestones,” she said of her role.
Among the reasons why she feels rooted in the industry and its projects is that renewable energy holds great potential for the future as it has opened new opportunities to the young generation through clean energy, she said, adding that it provides new experiences every day through challenges that are good for growth.
Nontsasa is committed to championing causes that expose young women to the renewable energy industry as there are not enough women in leadership positions who can serve as an example.
“The industry lacks competent young women and especially in strategic areas where they can exert influence and drive the development of the sector towards a more sustainable and inclusive one.
“I think women possess a unifying energy within them. Given a chance, they can lead successful teams and deliver an environment that builds and supports nature. Further, women are great at finding balance and as we transition towards a sustainable future; their input will be more and more invaluable.”
Nontsasa wants to advise young women to be join the industry as women “are still needed”. She hopes the youth can be able work hard towards their dreams as it is not an easy path. “Explore all available knowledge streams and focus on the goal – and never let your gender limit you.”
Ida Rudman
Quality Coordinator
For Ida Rudman, Red Rocket’s Quality Coordinator, renewable energy is the best way to save the planet.
She is tasked with supporting our endeavours to ensure that our sites and other operations comply with the quality standards as set out by our company policies and by law.
Having spent the last six years within the construction sector at different organisations, she has always been the only woman in her team, but that hasn’t set her back as her focus has always been to be a trailblazer.
“I like to add to successful tasks, and making a contribution to the environment and society is a satisfying thing,” she said.
Despite the challenges that come with the role, she notes the most fulfilling aspect is the opportunity to make a difference with one’s role, adding that it is “heart-warming to be part of something significant”.
Looking at the renewable energy landscape, Ida said women had always been represented, but not in top roles, however, this is a trend that is now changing in their favour. “A big example of this is Oyster Bay Site Manager Alicia Raghunandan, who has blazed a trail for women through her work.”
Ida’s advice for women in the industry is to not to be afraid despite the nature of the work environment. She advocates seeking support, especially when navigating a new role.
“Be yourself and go for it. Ask for help and always have questions and a team that can support and be there for you,” she said.
Valmay Vyver
Project Site Coordinator
“The most fulfilling part about my role is to see how everything comes together in perfect harmony.”
These are the words of Valmay Vyver, Project Site Coordinator at Red Rocket, who got her start in renewable energy at our organisation.
“I was curious about how the turbines are built and how it all works.”
Feeding her curiosity is what she continues to do as a dedicated member of our Brandvalley Wind Farm team, which will translate to the delivery of renewable energy into the grid when the project is operational.
“Being a woman in the energy industry is significant as I get to be part of such as world-class business,” she said, adding that women have a vital role to play in the energy industry. “We as women have the superpowers to transform anything in something magical.”
Her advice to women wishing to be part of the energy industry is to keep believing in themselves while following their dreams.
“Keep pushing yourself to achieve your goals. And most of all, step out of your comfort zone.”
