Kruisvallei Hydro has made a significant contribution to boost local tourism in the small town of Clarens, Free State, by sponsoring local Non-Profit Organisation, Phaphama Youth Development Centre, with 10 i-Glide V8 Segways. Due to the Free State tourism sector still reeling from the effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic, this initiative aims to develop township tourism and create job opportunities for residents. Furthermore, it is aligned with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but directly contributes to achieving SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Segways have in the recent past gained much attention as a recreational and tourism tool, giving holidaymakers and thrill-seekers an adventurous way to discover new places. In addition to the 10 segways, the NGO was supported with a variety of marketing resources to promote the new Township Segway Tours. These include tear-drop and pop-up banners, the creation of a website, branded half-dome helmets, and reflectors.
In 2023, Kruisvallei Hydro supported Phaphama Youth Development Centre’s through a holistic development programme focused on institutional development. The programme included training in areas such as institutional governance, financial management, SARS compliance, fundraising, and monitoring and evaluation. Offering township tours is envisaged to increase the NGO’s income streams, further strengthening the centre’s ability to manage and sustain its community projects effectively. Visitors and locals will also get the opportunity to see their surroundings in a new light.
“The establishment of Township Segway Tours is not just about providing an adventure for tourists,” said a representative from Kruisvallei Hydro. “It’s about creating long-term opportunities for the people of Clarens, enhancing their livelihoods, and helping the community thrive economically.”
The long-term vision for the project extends beyond immediate financial benefits. By fostering sustainable growth, these tours will also preserve the unique cultural heritage of the township and provide locals and visitors with an authentic experience. Moreover, the tours will enable local businesses to benefit from a growing tourism industry.
Phaphama Youth Development Centre’s involvement in the initiative further highlights Kruisvallei Hydro’s commitment to sustainability and meaningful community empowerment. The centre will play a key role in training local youth to operate and maintain the segways.
