Springing into Sustainability: A Season of Renewal at Red Rocket

As the warm weather returns and the Cape Floral Kingdom bursts with bright blooms, spring is in full swing – bringing with it a renewed sense of purpose, change, and the beauty of nature. At Red Rocket, this shift represents more than just a change in the weather, but a powerful moment to reflect on sustainability and our mission to build a greener future.

Embodying this vision in a significant way is our Sustainable Investments team, the dedicated custodians of the environment who put nature at the centre of everything we do. The team recently came together to share what sustainability means to them, along with how their daily work directly supports lasting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals on our projects.

Words such as longevity, balance, and endurance ignited the conversation, showing how these themes are not just goals, but a daily commitment driving our renewable energy commitments.

The team, headed by Sustainable Investments Director Magdalena Michalowska Logan, consists of Environmental & Social (E&S) Managers Janine Brasington and Ashleigh von der Heyden, E&S Specialists Ryan Collins and Serina Pillay, E&S Coordinators Liam Leetz and Tarryn Frankland, Integrated Management System (IMS) Manager Tim Szöke, and IMS Specialists Charmé Billing and Kerwyn Gunkel. They all work tirelessly to turn vision into action and pave a sustainable path for Red Rocket’s renewable energy portfolio.

“In the project space, the focus on sustainability is all about meeting the ESG goals of the project to sustain and promote a future that is clean and meets the needs of our communities. In the same way that the season marks nature’s shift, sustainability represents a shift in ways of thinking – from old, traditional practices to new, innovative ways that address energy demands,” the team proudly affirmed.

With the level of impact created daily, it is little wonder that clean energy is more than a career choice for the team, but the opportunity of “being at the forefront of change” and realising the tangible element of seeing the difference in real time.

“It’s about building a cleaner, greener future and having a direct impact on that mission. This is because clean energy is forward-thinking, dynamic, purposeful, and impactful, and what we appreciate about our work is that we deal with things from the beginning, right through to the entire lifecycle,” they said.

The result of this is a contribution that is meaningful environmentally, socially, and economically while introducing cutting-edge solutions. This includes areas such as construction, where considerations are always made to mitigate environmental risk.

This year, Red Rocket was the first renewable energy company in South Africa to implement automated shutdown-on-demand technology at the Brandvalley and Rietkloof wind farms – the first two projects under the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) Bid Window 5 to reach commercial operations. The technology, developed by international avian-monitoring company Bioseco, was implemented to mitigate bird collisions with turbines, and will be rolled out at other Red Rocket wind projects currently under construction.

“Red Rocket is always a company of firsts – we’re often the first to bring new ideas forward. Whether it’s implementing automated shutdown-on-demand systems to build on human-led interventions or refining our environmental impact practices, each step forward is a reminder that progress and sustainability go hand-in-hand.

“Working in clean energy is a privilege because we get to contribute to the value we are creating for future generations. We’re empowering futures, and we do what we do with the purpose of leaving a lasting positive legacy – one that ensures sustainable progress,” they said.

This journey started long before any of the Sustainable Investments team members joined the energy sector, starting from school environmental clubs to watching informative National Geographic documentaries, animal care, camping trips, surfing, and a general love of the outdoors. What started as childhood activities to feed the curiosity eventually evolved into inspired clarity through diverse tertiary studies and full-circle moments that now fuel a brighter future in renewable energy.

When asked what keeps them motivated, the answer was clear: it’s the beauty of the natural world and the belief that it mustn’t be taken for granted. It’s also the inspiration drawn from leadership, especially our Sustainable Investments Director, whose vision and constant motivation drive the work we do.

“Being in a new environment like our project sites, for example, in the Karoo, is awe-inspiring and sparks a realisation of how beautiful and essential our environment is,” they said, adding that every role in the team contributes to long-term change due to a deeper focus on the legacy that is left behind.

“The answer lies in renewable systems that produce infinite, clean power with a minimal footprint, and operations that hold up against traditional energy models in both sustainability and efficiency.”

Red Rocket is proud to adopt international best practices and nature-positive interventions tailored to each project. Compliance with global frameworks such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and the Equator Principles, along with the national legislation, ensures that every development is environmentally, socially, and ethically responsible in the long run, as well as aligning with specific UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“Our team has grown over the years, not just in size, but in our collective spirit. Not only is the focus on compliance, but it’s also about imparting knowledge, changing mindsets, and the domino effect that these actions trigger, so the environment and people are positively affected,” the team said.
